The brief for Merton Road was for 17 total units with 9 allocated for shared ownership and 8 for supported living for people with learning difficulties. Our solution for Merton Road won the award for 'Best Small Development' in the National Housing Awards 2013 with an assertion that it was an 'affordable home ownership scheme that does not compromise on design and build quality'.
We began by massing two primary accommodation volumes linked with a set-back circulation core - this reflected the residential scale of the building's context which had originally been 2 large villas; these had been bombed in the war. Large, high-quality window units ensure that all spaces are naturally well-lit. These glazing units are articulated with recesses and extrusions to provide rhythm and avoid the usual monotony.
